A THING by JORDYN DAMATO
Millie and Me
My car has began driving herself
Not without the key, of course
I start the engine
Rev her a couple times for good measure
Spend some time picking out my ideal driving song
Today it’s “Cruel and Beautiful World” by Grouplove
The bass bumps in my Saturn
People judge me for driving a Saturn
They’re just jealous of my bass, if not because of her shiny lime green coat
I'm a bit of an attention grabber
If you couldn’t already tell
My dad hates my car, hates the color and hates the bass
I hate my dad
My mom is alright, though
I like to hangout in my car more than anywhere else
How rude of me, I forgot to introduce you to my car
Her name is Millie
She is 11 years old
Only 3 years old to me, though
Her gas gauge doesn’t work
We’re all at least a little broken, right?
I have to keep track of my miles so I know when I’m running low
I run out of gas often
My dad always keeps a gas can in the trunk of his Audi for reasons like this
I hate my dad
He offers to buy me a new car every other week
I don't need it
Millie is perfect; she’s my best friend
He says, “how about having a best friend you can actually count on?”
Never had one of those
Not interested
Not necessary
Not happy
Only with Millie
She can’t drive herself, though
I lied
I do that a lot
Don't blame me
Blame yourself
I already told you I was an attention grabber
